Headmaster's Letter

Headmaster's Letter

Dear Parents,

At Echelford the overriding aim is to create a secure, pleasant, caring and disciplined environment in which the most effective learning can take place and where the children can enjoy their days in the primary school. We also try to encourage the development of good manners, courtesy, self discipline and healthy attitudes. We aim to foster a sense of true values and of social and moral obligations.

If your child is to join us for the first time we welcome you as parents and look forward to a happy and successful partnership over the coming years.

If you already have a child here we are pleased to renew the important links between us.

Our third Ofsted inspection took place in October of the Autumn Term 2006. The subsequent report applauded in particular the above average academic standards, the breadth of the curriculum offered including a wide range of lunchtime and after-school clubs, the strong level of pastoral support, the very good behaviour and attitudes displayed by our children, and the quality of the school's relationship with the parents. These identified strengths, coupled with our very good musical, dramatic and sporting achievements, provide a sound basis for the continuing development of our school.

In 2003 we received, for the second year running, an Academic Achievement Award from the government. Last year we were awarded Sportsmark Accreditation which recognises the high profile attached to physical education within the school. In the 2005 - 2006 school football season Echelford became the Surrey County Under 11 champions for the first time in our history, and in 2006 - 07 the school team achieved national honours by winning the Division 1 Football League Community Cup playing in the final at the new Wembley Stadium. In 2007 we were delighted to receive the prestigious Artsmark award in recognition of the breadth and quality of the arts curriculum within the school. We endeavour to give our children every opportunity to engage in a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular activities both within the school, between schools and in the wider community.

While this website provides information about the school, its curriculum and activities, real confidence in a school only comes from knowing and understanding what is happening within it. We hope, therefore, that you will always feel welcome to come in and discuss any matters or problems with myself or a member of staff. We hope, too, that you will also take advantage of the several formal occasions set aside during the year for you to consult with the teachers and/or view the work of the school as a whole. It is most important that mutual understanding and trust should form the basis of our shared responsibility for the education of the young people in our care. Our children only pass through their school years once. We must strive to give them the very best.

Yours sincerely,

MR. A. F. WILSON

Admission Policy

Admission Policy

By law children must start full time education no later than the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday.

In Surrey the Education Committee has implemented a development plan which enables all children to be admitted into school in the September of the academic year during which they become five.

Echelford is a three form entry community primary school with a Published Admission Number of 90 for first admissions. Subject to places being available the school will also admit children into the other year groups up to the age of 11. Our current policy at Echelford School is to offer a choice of full or part-time education from the start of the academic year for all our new Foundation Stage (Reception) children. Children whose parents feel are not ready to stay for the whole day will attend for mornings only from 8:30 am to 11:30 am during the Autumn Term and will normally then become full time after Christmas. This admissions policy is kept under review and may be amended in the future.

Application forms for entry during academic year 2008/2009 should by now have been obtained from and returned to the school. Late applications will only be considered after the applicants who met this deadline have been offered places.

There are no fixed catchment areas and the following priorities will only apply if the school is oversubscribed and the number of admissions has to be limited:-

1. First Priority: Looked-after Children

Children who are registered as being in the care of the loal authority (e.g. fostered or living in a children's home)

2. Second Priority: Exceptional Arrangements

Occasionally there will be a small number of children for whom exceptional arrangements will apply. This category may include children with statements of special educational needs where a particular school is named in the statement, and children with medical conditions or other sensitive individual and compelling family circumstances.

3. Third Priority: Brothers ans sisters (Siblings)

A sibling is a child who will have an older brother or sister already in attendance at the school to which application is being made.

4. Fourth Priority: Children for whom the school is the nearest to their home

The nearest school is defined as the closest to their home address admitting pupils of the appropriate age range. The distance is measured, in a straight line, from the address point of the pupil's house, as set by Ordnance Survey, to the nearest school gate available for pupils to use. This is calculated using the Admission and Transport Team's Geographical Information System. The nearest school may be either inside or outside the county boundary.Parents should note that if they apply for free transport different criteria apply. (Refer to page 23 in the booklet "Information on school admissions and transfers".)

5. Fifth Priority: Any other applicant

If the school is oversubscribed within any category places will be offered according to the distance measured in a straight line from the permanent home address.

There are no separate criteria for the admission of disabled pupils. disabled pupils are not treated less favourably than any other children in the school. However, as this school is situated on three floors and there is no lift, certain categories of disabled pupils may find access to classrooms unsuited to their needs.

Currently Echelford School has 656 pupils on roll and is one of the largest primary schools in Surrey.

An open evening is normally held during early October to give prospective pupils, parents and other interested parties the opportunity to see the school and the facilities it has to offer.

History of the School to the Present Day

History of the School

Echelford School has played an important role in Ashford's community since 1933, when it was opened in Knapp Road, Ashford. This is where Clarendon Primary School is now sited.

1973 saw a change-over in various schools in the area. The old Clarendon Road Infants School was closed and demolished and the old people's flats now stand on this site.

After considerable initial opposition, Surrey County Council managed to persuade parents of children at Echelford School, Knapp Road, that the facilities at the Park Road site were of such excellence that the inconvenience of travelling from central Ashford would be worthwhile and so the junior school became a middle school on the new site.

In 1993, as part of the County's re-organisation programme, areas of the school were re-furbished and adapted. Infants were admitted and the school became an all-through primary. January 2004 saw the opening of an independent pre-school facility on site.

Echelford has over a long period maintained a high reputation within the community for its academic standards and sporting achievements and for its orchestral, choral and dramatic excellence.

The Governors' policy of promoting community use enables a range of adult and youth organisations to make use of the school's superb facilities during the evenings and at weekends.

Teaching Organisation

Teaching Organisation

When the school became an all through primary in 1993 some alterations to the school's internal organisation were made. The post of deputy Headteacher was discontinued. Two Assistant Headteachers co-ordinate the work of the Infant and Junior Departments, and there is a teacher in charge of our Centre for pupils with speech, language and communication needs. Class teachers, in addition to their main responsibility for the progress and welfare of each pupil in their charge may also have responsibility for co-ordinating various faculty areas of the curriculum.

A specialist room is available for the teaching of Art, Craft and Design Technology. The school also has a well equipped gymnasium for Physical Education, a large Assembly Hall with stage and a separate Dining Hall. The building of a new computer suite was completed in January 2000. This has recently been re-equipped with new computers and serves the ICT training needs of a whole class at once. The junior library is situated in a room on the top corridor and in addition there are separate library and resource facilities available for the infant children.

On first admission to Reception, children are placed in classes of mixed ability according to age. They receive a range of whole-class, group and individual teaching. A certain amount of teaching children grouped according to ability takes place as appropriate e.g. setting for mathematics in the junior department and for literacy in Years 5 and 6. Assisted literacy lessons operate in Years 3 and 4. Class sizes currently range from 24 to 34. Where possible, additional teacher support is provided to enable children to be placed in smaller teaching groups. Teaching assistants are also used widely to support children's learning both in the infant and junior departments.

Homework

Homework

We believe that homework encourages children to develop good work habits and independent study skills. It provides an opportunity for them to practise and reinforce skills learned in the classroom and can enhance study by making use of materials and sources of information which may not be available at school.

The nature of the homework and the quantity given will depend upon the age and ability of the child but can include; completion or consolidation of work, learning spellings or tables, preparing for a class talk, research, collecting materials, reading.

All junior children have a home-school contact book which you, as parents are asked to check and sign to confirm that homework set has been completed. Messages from the teacher to you and vice versa can also be written in this contact book.

Please ensure that any school books brought home are looked after with care and returned.

Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care

The most important person in the child's school life is his / her class teacher. The teacher is the one who is most likely to notice the needs of individual pupils, and the one who should be informed if family or other personal problems arise. The Headteacher or other senior members of staff are always willing to help in situations requiring special attntion. Parents will be contacted whenever it is deemed necessary.

School Rules and Discipline

School Rules and Discipline

The basic rule of the school is to observe courtesy at all times. The school works towards the establishment of an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust. Good behaviour is expected from all pupils in their dealings with each other, with members of staff and with other adults. Anti-social conduct of any description will not be tolerated. Within the building children are expected to walk in a quiet and orderly fashion.

The educational process is likely to be more successful if it is based on three-way co-operation between the school, the child and the parents. To this end we have developed a Home-School Agreement in which all parties agree their respective roles in this joint responsibility. This Agreement includes reference to appropriate conduct expected from the pupils of Echelford School.

The development of good behaviour and responsible attitudes is encouraged in the Infant Department through the formation of classroom rules and the giving of reward and encouragement. A weekly special gold star assembly is held to celebrate notable achievements in work and behaviour. Parents are kept informed whenever there are incidents of inappropriate behaviour.

For the Juniors, team points may be awarded or Good News slips given for outstanding behaviour, sustained effort, quality of work, sportsmanship etc. Junior children whose behaviour gives cause for concern are likely to be issued with a report card each week which is monitored daily be staff. Good news slips and Report Cards are two of the methods used to keep parents informed about their children's conduct in school. Extra sessions of work after school, lunchtime detention or exclusion and full formal fixed term or permanent exclusions are sanctions available for use by the school against any junior child for persistent and / or serious breaches of discipline.

We aim to develop a sense of responsibility in all our children and one of the ways this is encouraged is by giving children at the top of the school the opportunity to become prefects, sports captains or house captains. A Head Girl and Head Boy are appointed to represent the school on special occasions throughout the year.

Children are expected to be punctual in their attendance. They should arrive on the school premises between 8.15 and 8.30 a.m. (or between 7.35 and 8.10 a.m. if coming to breakfast club.) If a child is delayed coming to school, he / she must report first to the office on arrival.

Jewellery is quite unsuitable for wear to school, especially earrings. Children with pierced ears should wear a single pair of simple studs - anything else can be very dangerous to the wearer in an active environment. The wearing of watches is permitted for junior age children but the school will accept no responsibility for their loss or damage. Ear studs and watches must be removed during P.E. and Games lessons in accordance with Surrey County Council's Safety Regulations. Parents are asked that ear piercing should take place at the beginning of the summer holidays to avoid depriving any child of P.E. and Games activities. Make-up is not permitted.

Bicycles

Bicycles

Children who have passed the Cycling Proviciency Test  or intend to do so may be permitted to cycle to school providing the following conditions are observed:

  • Initially a parental note is required requesting permission for the child to cycle to school.

  • On receipt of the note the Head Teacher will normally issue the child with a school permit to attach to the bicycle. This is on the understanding that the permit will be immediately withdrawn if the child is seen to breach the Highway Code at any time.

  • Cycles must be maintained in a roadworthy condition. Spot checks will be made.

  • Cycles must be left locked in the storage area set aside for them. These areas are out of bounds except for the parking and collecting of bicycles.

  • Cycles must not be ridden in the school grounds.

  • Children who ride to school must cycle on the road or cycle track. It is illegal to ride 'two on a bike'. The wearing of cycle helmets in strongly recommended.

Medical and Other Appointments off the School Premises

Medical and Other Appointments off the School Premises

A child attending such appointments must report to the school office before (s)he leaves the premises and again upon his/her return. Children are not allowed to leave the school without a note, a phone call or an accompanying parent.

If a child becomes ill during the day it is our policy to contact you at once. For this reason it is very important that we have an up-to-date record of your home and business telephone numbers. Please advise us immediately of any changes that occur. Any medicines or tablets considered essential by the doctor for a child to take at school must be handed in to the school office for safe keeping. The exception to this rule concerns asthma sufferers who are permitted to keep their inhalers with them at all times for immediate use.

    Telephone Messages

    Telephone Messages

These can be made to school between 8 a.m. and 4.30 p.m.

Where a pupil has forgotten to tell his/her parents of changes in plans we allow him/her to ring you to tell you what is happening. We must ask you, of course, to reimburse the cost of such a call. Naturally there is no charge for calls in the event of sickness or a last minute cancellation of a club or other activity.

    Parental Visits and Reports

    Parental Visits and Reports

Parents are welcome in school at any convenient time. The Headteacher or another member of the senior staff is usually available for interview at short notice. An advance note or telephone call is much appreciated. Arrangements to meet class and subject teachers are most easily made by sending a note to the teacher concerned. In the interests of security, parents must report first to the school office before proceeding to the classroom. Parents' evenings are held during the course of the year. These provide the opportunity for parents and staff to discuss the work and progress of each child in the school.

Written reports on National Curriculum subjects and other elements of each child's work and progress are issued towards the end of the Summer Term each year.

Absence from School and Family Holidays

    Absence from School

In the interests of safety and security, if your child is unwell or cannot attend for any other reason, please contact the school to advise us that (s)he will be absent. An answerphone service is provided for this purpose out of school hours. If we have not heard from you by 9 a.m. our office staff will endeavour to contact you. If we are unsuccessful our policy is to notify Surrey Police of our concern. A written note is required for record purposes on your child's return. Regulations require that all school distinguish in their attendance registers between authorised and unauthorised absences. Registers are officially closed 30 minutes after the start of each session. If a child arrives late but within that 30 minutes period (s)he will be recorded as late but will be counted as present. Arrival after this time will constitute an unauthorised absence unless a note of explanation isreceived from the parent in which case the absence would be regarded as authorised.

The percentage of sessions missed through authorised absence during last year's reporting period was 5.3%. During the same period the percentage for unauthorised absence was 0%.

    Family Holidays

The Education Act allows for a child to be absent for up to two weeks in a year for family holidays provided that permission has been granted by the school. Written requests for leave of absence must be submitted to the Headteacher in advance and each case will be considered on its merits.

    Meals

    Meals

School meals are prepared in our own kitchen and are paid for by cash or cheque on a weekly or half-termly basis. Cheques should be made payable to Surrey County Council. The correct money (currently (£1.80 per day / £9.00 per week) must be brought in on the first day of the week. Free meals are available to the children of families in receipt of Income Support. Application forms to apply for free school meals are obtainable from and should be returned to the school office.

Sandwich meals, when brought from home, must be packed in a polythene box clearly marked with the child's name. For safety reasons no glass bottles, glass-lined flasks or cans are permitted in school.

A week's notice in writing is required by the school office when a child wishes to change from packed lunches to school dinners or vice versa.

    Clubs and Extra-Curricular Activities

    Clubs and Extra-Curricular Activities

Under normal circumstances a variety of clubs and activities is offered to the children during the course of a week and according to the time of year. These incluse ICT, French, Spanish, Choir, Keyboard, Drama, Chess, Craft, Fitness, Dance, Gymnastics and Self-Defence. Other sporting activities include training sessions for Netball, Rounders, Athletics, Badminton, Cricket. Football, Tag Rugby and Cross Country. These may take place before school, during the lunch hour, or after the close of afternoon school.

The range of out-of-school-hours clubs and activities, some offered by approved outside providers, is continuing to develop in response to the government's out-of-school-hours initiative.

Children who join the clubs are expected to take part on a regular basis. Rehearsals for school stage productions may also occasionally take place on Saturday mornings or during the holidays.

For children requiring a breakfast at school we operate a Breakfast Club from 7.35 - 8.15 each morning.

Our on-site partner, The Town Tree Pre-School also provides after-school care until 6 pm by private arrangement. (Tel: 01784 229700)

    Visits and Journeys

    Visits and Journeys

Education off the school premises plays a very important part in our work. All classes have day visits during the year to places connected with the general work of the class. In addition children are given the chance to take part in extended school journeys at various stages of their junior school life. It must be stressed that visits and journeys are an extension of the child's work and are not to be regarded purely as holidays.
