Sports News and Results

District Sports

Echelford Primary School are this years Champions of the 2009 District Sports which, they won in some style. A tasty blend of effortless achievements in a variety of events brought victory to Echelford when the half time scores were announced. With just 2 points ahead Echelford were beginning to claim the lead. Despite two bad baton changeovers in the lower schools relay, huge cheers were heard when the upper school stormed back with their marginal winning relay defeat. The sweltering heat did not stop long distance runners brutally claiming their gold medals. An astonishing Year 5 long jumper broke new marks in the sand by clearing the furthest point of the day, sharing the joy of her gold medal with the furthest thrower of the day! Echelford raised the roof at Stompond Lane Arena when the final scores were announced. With a strong squad of 43 children an overall total of 18 gold medals were won. This contributed to the 171 final point score with a marginal clearance ahead of the 147 points for the second position place holders that brought the winning shield home to Echelford School.

National Sports Week

This year, for the first time, Echelford Primary school took part in a week of organised sporting activities during National Sports Week along with 10,000 other schools and 3 million children. Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week is integral to the delivery of the Government's PE and Sport Strategy for Young People and contributing towards the target of offering young people up to five hours of high quality PE and sport a week by 2012. An exciting and overloaded curriculum was planned for children to participate in sports never attempted before enabling all children to access a variety of challenging sports and activities at all levels. The weeks planned events ranged from:

• Rock climbing

• Obstacle courses

• Mini triathlons

• Whole year group marathons

• Writing autobiographies

• History of sporting events

• Writing healthy menus and recipes

• Preparing fruit kebabs

• Tug-of-war

• Inter class sports competitions

• World record breaking attempts

Not only were the children inspired but this also rubbed off onto the teachers. This week raised the profile of the place of P.E in school and also its importance out of school. Despite the roaring heat conditions play still continued at Echelford School and a great memorable time was had by all!

7-a-Side Soccer Success

Our school once again hosted the annual Spelthorne Schools' Soccer Tournaments for boys and girls in October.

On Thursday the girls (last year's winners) easily won their qualifying group and were highly fancied until they lost to Chennestone School on penalties at the semi-final stage after a goalless draw.

The boys started off on a slow burn and drew their first two matches. They didn't find the goal until their third group match. However, they did enough to qualify for the knockout stage of the competition. They met St. Ignatius School in an action-packed final which ended 2-2 after extra time. Echelford lifted the trophy after winning a tense penalty shoot-out.
